Curiouser and curiouser!
My husband and I have two boys aged 6 and 3. They are funny, boisterous, at times challenging, happy, loud and above all intensely curious.
My oldest (for privacy I will refer to as Woody, a much loved character from an old favorite movie Toys) is quiet, serious, highly analytical and in general an introvert. He has always had diverse interests and has insisted on going deep on pretty much all these interests. So at various points over the last 6 years, we have found ourselves reading and exploring in detail: car brands, traffic signs, maps, the calendar, countries and their capitals, states and their capitals, US Presidents, NFL statistics and every Brad Paisley song that exists (don’t ask about that last one!). Two interests that have remained are music/piano and also math. He has had a lovely piano teacher for the past year and a half who has managed to instill in him a love for piano. He is still the only kid I know who asks to practice piano. Math has been an interest from very early on. He is now operating several grade ahead of his class and we are always looking for ways to keep him challenged and interested in this subject.
My youngest (Buzz from the same movie Toys) is an extrovert who seemed to come out of the womb talking. He is the one most likely to stand in front of a crowd and belt out a song in perfect pitch. Just when I thought I had kind of figured my older son out, I get blessed with this bundle of energy who is the polar opposite of his brother in many ways. Buzz learns in a completely different way than Woody. Woody would get into a topic and this was all he would be able to think about for days and months. Buzz, at any given time, has many more interests. He is also much more communicative and social than his brother. He is also quite the athlete — very unusual in our academic (OK let me just come out and say it, nerdy!) family.
But at the same time they are “kindred spirits” in their need to explore all things in depth, their constant questions and their lovely sense of humor.
As we have tried to answer the many many questions raised by both boys, I found myself getting increasingly disorganized with a cluttered desk and laptop. I started this blog as a way to keep better track of the many resources that I have started to pull on to feed these two voracious beasts. Even in the short time it has been up, it has helped me get my brain organized…a no small feat, I assure you!
I realize that some of our interests on this site are pretty eclectic (what other kid could possible love Brad Paisley, maps and math?) but I do hope that other parents will find some of the resources listed here useful. I am already learning tons from other blogs out there and I hope to continue to hear, share and learn from parents of other eclectic kids like mine!
